The Internet was initially designed to ensure seamless communication across the nation, even in times of crisis, war, or natural disaster. This resilient connectivity is achieved through the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), enabling Autonomous Systems (AS) to interact and communicate effectively. At IXP Farm, we are part of a community of experts who understand these intricate systems, using our expertise to innovate and drive the future of connectivity forward.

The Challenge We Face

Despite the significant investment of hundreds of billions in taxpayer funds by state and federal governments, the potential of the Internet infrastructure remains underutilized. The majority of this investment has been directed toward fiber optics, yet over 90% of these networks are restricted to private, proprietary use. This approach limits access and inflates costs, diverging from the original vision of government-funded infrastructure as a public utility.

Rethinking Internet Access

Imagine if every road in America were a toll road, lacking maintenance and standardization, requiring long detours to connect with other roads. This analogy reflects the inefficiencies of our current Internet infrastructure. Most networks converge in costly data centers, creating barriers for many due to financial and geographical challenges. This centralized model contradicts the Internet's foundational vision of a decentralized, universally accessible network. Our approach aims to reshape this model, aligning it with the original intent and meeting Alabama's need for equitable access.
